Organization Description :

The Flemish Association for Development Co-Operation and Technical Assistance, VVOB was founded on 10 May 1982 as a joint initiative of the Minister of Education, the Flemish Council and the foundation Flemings in the World. Originally VVOB stood for Flemish Association for Training Programmes in Foreign Countries, but this later evolved into the current name. VVOB is involved with the transfer of knowledge to developing countries. VVOB and its development co-operators organise and participate in education, training and research activities in developing countries. Nowadays, VVOB particularly focuses on creating a qualitative working environment for the expatriate development workers (+/- 170 in number). VVOB is subsidized by the Belgian federal government through DGIS (General Office for Development Co-Operation) as well as by the Flemish government for the realisation of development programmes which are in line with the development policy of both institutions. Prevention of physical poverty and sustainable development are both key elements of the activities and co-operation which take place between DGIS and VVOB. In accordance with the policy of ABOS, VVOB-activities are concentrated in a limited number of countries and in a limited number of fields, i.e. education and training, as well as public health care, food supply and environmental care. With regard to education, VVOB will focus on primary education, vocational and technical training and teacher training during the next 5 years.
